Building Y-Combinator For Filmmaking

Building Y-Combinator For Filmmaking

The Wonder Studios Core Flywheel

One of our core missions at Wonder is to help uncover the next generation of filmmaking talent.

It was this mission that led us to launch Beyond the Loop - our anthology of short films, created by breakthrough filmmakers in the space, packaged and supported by Wonder. (Executive Producers in Season 1 included Kling, ElevenLabs fal & Freepik).

What started as an experiment, caught fire and became a major success. The anthology was streamed over a million times, featured on NBC, covered in Deadline and raised the profiles of our first cohort of artists: Nik Kleverov, Noah Miller, Jovardi, Ethereal Moon (Melody & Dina) and Panaviscope (Alex Duloz).

Wonder was born out of community and since then, we’ve grown to a team of 30+ and a collective of world-class artists, storytellers and filmmakers, all within our marketplace, The Wonder Platform.

We believe that the next Spielberg, Scorsese, and more, will be found within this community, testing and experimenting with the tools today, anywhere in the world.

Collapsing the Capital Stack: Filmmakers as Founders

One of the macro shifts we’re betting on is the rise of the artist entrepreneur. It’s now possible for world-builders to spin-up cinematic quality storytelling without traditional gatekeepers to stop them, or millions of dollars in funding to unlock them.

YouTube has democratised distribution and AI is lowering the barriers to Hollywood grade production.

As a result, we’re pioneering a new model for IP ownership in the AI-native era and launching Y-Combinator for filmmaking. Today we’re introducing our ‘DREAM framework’ (inspired by founder-friendly instruments like the SAFE) and launching Season 2 of Beyond the Loop.

Why We’re Building a Framework to Empower Filmmakers

When I started my career founding Nexus Notes, we were lucky enough to be selected for Blackbird Ventures’ accelerator program ‘Startmate’ (incidentally Blackbird is now one of Wonder’s major investors). This program was like an MBA on steroids, like Y-combinator, the founders were exposed to mentors, given access to tech platforms, peer support and connected with investors. It helped new founders learn the ropes with respect to how to build a company from zero to one and it changed my life.

Y-Combinator is just one example of this model, but by far and away it’s the most successful – incubating the likes of Stripe, Airbnb, DoorDash and Reddit.

YC birthed a new generation of world-changing companies and founders, but critically it also pioneered a new way of funding early stage companies: the ‘SAFE’. By open sourcing this founder-friendly document and by lowering the complexity of raising capital, it helped create a rising tide for all early-stage companies.

Introducing the DREAM

Our vision with Beyond the Loop is to identify the next breakout stars of Hollywood. These are the world-builders using new technology to bring ideas to life.

Small teams can now create cinematic-quality work in months, not years. But while the tools have changed, the business structures haven’t. The film industry is still stuck in a pre-SAFE era: filmmakers fight for net points that rarely pay out, navigate opaque accounting, and often lose control of their IP before they’ve shot a frame.

To build the Y-Combinator of IP we needed to create our own instrument: the DREAM framework.

What is the DREAM Framework?

It treats short films the way startups treat prototypes. You start with a short. You release it early. You build momentum and audience. If the story proves itself, you scale it.

The DREAM framework - Wonder Studios' model for AI filmmaker IP ownership

D.R.E.A.M. is the legal infrastructure for the Beyond the Loop anthology. It rests on five principles:

  • Distribution First: Release early to build an audience and proof before expansion.

  • Rights Clarity: Wonder owns the finished short for clean distribution, while creators retain their underlying tools and workflows.

  • Equity Mindset: If a project expands, filmmakers share in the upside as partners.

  • Access: Wonder provides capital, legal structure, and industry reach.

  • Momentum: The short becomes proof, not just a pitch.

What That Means In Practice

The real power of the framework unlocks when a project works. If a short evolves into a series or feature, that success converts into a partnership with shared IP ownership. We are stripping away the hidden deductions and net points to align our incentives. We take the financial risk on the prototype so you can prove the concept.

Hollywood net points promise a share of “net profits” but only after the studio recoups everything: budget, marketing, fees, overhead, and more. Those 1–5 points sit at the bottom of the waterfall. By the time the maths is done, “net” rarely exists and the filmmaker gets nothing.

If the story wins, we win together.

What to expect in Season 2:

Season 2 is going to be bigger, better and bolder. We’ve partnered with some incredible tech partners (to be announced soon) who are going to take our access to tools and exposure to the next level. We’ve brought in industry experts to help mentor and support filmmakers with their craft, and we’re investing like never before in building out behind-the-scenes, events, and marketing to help bring their vision to life, and the fans closer to how the films are made.

Beyond the Loop Season 2 announcement - applications open for AI filmmakers

We’re hoping to demonstrate what’s possible in this new era, placing more ownership in the hands of creators and surfacing the next generation of talent - if you’re an aspiring filmmaker or someone who’s passionate about filmmaking or creativity, we’re looking for you!

We’re still looking for one final filmmaker to complete the six, and you can apply today in the Wonder app.

We want to demonstrate what’s possible in this new era, placing more ownership in the hands of creators and surfacing the next generation of talent.
